Artak Zakaryan: Hungarian authorities should apologize to Armenia
To prove their commitment to democratic and humanitarian values, the Hungarian authorities should take certain actions, Artak Zakaryan, chairman of the Armenian National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, told reporters in Yerevan in an interview, commenting on the suspension of diplomatic relations with Hungary by Armenia after Hungary’s extradition of Azeri axe-murderer Ramil Safarov and his pardon by the Azerbaijani President and Hungary’s sending a diplomatic note to Armenia offering to end unilateral suspension of diplomatic ties with Hungary.
According to Zakaryan, the first thing Budapest should do is to apologize to Armenia.
“There are certain norms and expectations under which the diplomatic note sent to Armenia by Hungary is extremely unsatisfactory,” the lawmaker stressed.
The Hungarian authorities, Zakaryan believes, should be able to prove to both Armenia and their European partners that European values and mutual respect cannot be one-sided.
“Given Armenia’s interest in solving various problems and European Union’s attitude to them, it would be desirable if the Hungarian authorities also showed an adequate attitude to the existing problems concerning both the Safarov Case and Azerbaijan’s actions and the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Zakaryan concluded.
