Iran military scenario possible, Russian FM says
The West’s real target is not Syria but Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday, as reported by Iran’s Mehr news agency.
Referring to the developments in the Middle East, Lavrov said, “They make a devil out of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, blaming everything on him. This is a big geopolitical game. The geopolitical map of the Middle East is changing, with each of the players pursuing his own interests in the region. The real target of some forces is not Syria but Iran because they openly declare that Iran should be deprived of its closest ally, whom they consider to be Assad.”
As the Libyan experience has shown, sadly, a military scenario is possible, the Russian FM said when asked whether Israel or the United States could start military operations in Iran.
Russia will scuttle any UN Security Council resolution that could be interpreted as allowing military action against Iran, Lavrov added.
