Expert: U.S. presidential elections will have impact on Armenia
“I support Obama's candidacy for president. Depending on the fact who will be elected, Obama or Romney, the U.S. presidential elections will have an impact on Armenia and the entire region,” Richard Giragosian, director of the Regional Studies Center (RSC), told reporters in Yerevan, referring to the upcoming presidential elections in the United States.
“The American-Armenian relations will remain unchanged. In other words, they are stable and unchangeable. The negative influence of the elections concerns the Armenian Genocide issue. Unfortunately, irrespective of the fact which of the candidates will be elected, none of them will push the Armenian Genocide issue,” said the expert.
Secondly, Giragosian said, the U.S. presidential elections will influence the American-Russian relations. If Romney is elected, we should expect a sharp confrontation with Russia.
Thirdly, the elections will have an impact on the American-Iranian relations.
“Obama stated that if he is reelected, he will start a dialogue with Iran. Romney is more aggressive and is inclined to launch military operations against Iran,” the expert added.
Another important influence is connected with oil situation and Azerbaijan because both Romney and Obama appreciate the importance of oil factor.
“The next important circumstance is that Romney as an individual has no experience in the field of security, including the military one. Any Republican leader has a worse understanding of the Karabakh issue,” Giragorsian concluded.
