Preliminary results of Census 2011: 2 871 771 people live in Armenia
The preliminary results of Population Census 2011 show that 2 871 771 people live in Armenia, as of overnight October 12, 2011. The permanent population of Armenia is 3 018 854, Karine Kuyumjyan, head of the Population Census and Demography Department, National Statistical Service of Armenia, told reporters in Yerevan, announcing the end of the first phase of Population Census 2011.
According to the preliminary results, the population of Armenia decreased by 130 823 compared to 2001 and the permanent population decreased by 194 157.
36.7 percent of the permanent population of Armenia live in villages (1 107 567) and 63.3 percent in cities (1 911 287), 55.5 percent of which live in Yerevan. The number of urban dwellers decreased by 154 866 (7.5 percent) and of rural dwellers by 39 291 (3.4 percent) compared to 2001.
Population Census 2011 started on October 12, 2011. The final results of the Census will be published in 2013.
