Foundation laying ceremony held for Meghri HPP
The foundation laying ceremony of Meghri hydroelectric power plant (HPP) took place in Syunik region several hours ago. President Serzh Sargsyan as well as Iranian energy delegation led by Energy Minister, Iranian Co-Chair of Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation Majid Namjoo attended the ceremony, a Panorama.am correspondent reported from Syunik.
Addressing those present, Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan noted that the construction project of Meghri-Gharachilar HPP cascade is implemented with the efforts of Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission which worked on the project for one year.
The Minister reminded that Armenia and Iran signed an intergovernmental agreement on building and operating HPPs over the Arax River in 2007. The parliaments of Armenia and Iran ratified the agreement in 2008.
Construction works of Meghri HPP will be implemented by the Iranian side. The HPP is scheduled to be completed five years later.
