Ruben Safrastyan: U.S. foreign policy will depend on regional developments
The U.S. foreign policy in the region will undergo changes, Ruben Safrastyan, Director of the Oriental Studies Institute of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, told reporters in Yerevan while commenting on the results of the U.S. presidential elections.
“I think during Barack Obama’s second term of presidency, the U.S. foreign policy will depend on regional developments and not on the approaches of the White House,” he added.
Mr Safrastyan thinks the U.S. attention will be directed to Syria and Iran.
As for the Karabakh settlement process, according to the expert, the White House could come up with new initiatives within the Madrid Principles framework.
During Barack Obama’s first term of presidency, Safrastyan said, the United States let Russia play the leading role in the Karabakh settlement.
However, currently Turkey’s regional role has increased, and Ankara will make an attempt to use it in the process of Karabakh conflict settlement, which in its turn could lead to the intensification of the United States policy, the expert concluded.
