Expert: Karabakh realized right to self-determination, including in battlefield
The decision made on December 1, 1989 was the first move throughout the Karabakh movement. On the one hand, it was the start of independent fight, on the other hand, it was the start of victories, political scientist, member of Hayazn union Armen Aghayan told a news conference in Yerevan.
We will remind that on December 1, 1989 the Supreme Council of Armenian SSR and the National Council of the Autonomous Region of Nagorno-Karabakh (ARNC) passed a joint resolution on Reunification of Armenian SSR and Nagorno-Karabakh.
“By “right to self-determination” many people mean the right to hold a referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh, but the real right to self-determination was realized including by this decision and by the following military operations,” said the expert.
However, according to him, the ruling body of Karabakh movement began to gradually depart from its goals.
“The elite was afraid of the pressure put on the independent Armenia and, to get rid of a headache, during the independence referendum, ensured Nagorno-Karabakh’s non-participation, so that Artsakh would declare independence separately,” Aghayan concluded.
