Alexander Markarov: Tsarukyan’s decision not to run for president means that Serzh Sargsyan is unlikely to face serious rival
Prosperous Armenia Party’s decision not to nominate its presidential candidate means that incumbent President, RPA candidate Serzh Sargsyan is unlikely to face a serious rival, political scientist Alexander Markarov told Panorama.am, commenting on PAP’s decision not to nominate its candidate and not to back any candidate during the presidential elections.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that there will be no difficulties during the election campaign. The election campaign will focus on the past way and the problems needing solution during the presidency of the next candidate, according to Markarov.
“I wonder what tactics will be adopted and what programs will be presented by candidates following this decision of Prosperous Armenia, although this decision is unlikely to have key importance,” said the expert.
As for other presidential candidates, according to Markarov, unlike the ruling party’s candidate, their electorate is insufficient for them to have grounds to hope for victory or to speak of presidential run-off.
The following candidates have announced their intention to run for president: New Times Party leader Aram Karapetyan, National Self-Determination Union leader Paruyr Hayrikyan, specialist in epic Vardan Sedrakyan, People’s Party leader Tigran Karapetyan, Marxist Party of Armenia leader David Hakobyan, Heritage party leader Raffi Hovannisian. Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) will support incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan.
