Former Republic party member Smbat Ayvazyan calls for unification for future of Armenia
Smbat Ayvazyan, former member of Republic party, issued a statement on the upcoming presidential elections.
The statement, released by Smbat Ayvazyan’s office, reads, in part: “We will struggle and will present our approaches and programs in the near future. We will struggle for the sake of free and democratic Armenia.”
“The refusal of Gagik Tsarukyan, leader of Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) formed by the authorities as an artificial alternative political party, to run for president once again dispelled illusions of possible political struggle in the country.
PAP, a party that received almost the half of the votes in the parliamentary elections, realizing that the people seeking to reject the authorities are ready to follow even a false alternative force, committed a political crime when it refused to struggle for the post of president.
Just like the National Unity Party and Orinats Yerkir Party did it in 2003 and 2008, the political elite disappointed hundreds of thousands of our compatriots with behind-the-scenes agreements.
In order to retain power, they once again betrayed their own people, turning PAP into an instrument for disorienting the electorate.
PAP, imitating opposition, not only killed the people’s hope of creating a competitive political arena but also contributed to the weakening of the opposition movement which was expressing the protest of the people against unemployment, poverty and lawlessness.
I urge those who are devoted to their homeland and interested in its future to unite and raise for the protection of their constitutional rights.”
