Georgian amnesty law bypasses Georgian-Armenian activist Vahagn Chakhalyan
The name of Georgian-Armenian activist Vahagn Chakhalyan has been removed from the list of prisoners who will be set free following the adoption of amnesty law in Georgia, Chakhalyan’s lawyer, Stepan Voskanyan, told Panorama.am.
The activist’s lawyer refused to reveal the next step from tactical considerations but said that in all probability they would appeal this decision.
“I am going to visit Vahagn during the coming four days, we will talk and clarify our future tasks and only after it I will make a statement for the media,” Voskanyan noted.
Vahagn Chakhalyan was arrested in summer 2008 on accusations of possession of weapons and incitement to disorders and sentenced to 10 years in prison. On October 5, 2011, Chakhalyan announced hunger strike demanding to put an end to illegal pressure on him and improve prison conditions. On October 12, he stopped the hunger strike in respect for call of the head of the Armenian Diocese of Georgia.
