World Civil Defense Day marked today
World Civil Defence Day, marked on March 1 every year, is promoted by the International Civil Defense Organisation (ICDO), an intergovernmental organisation whose objective is to contribute to the development of civil protection organization worldwide.
Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia are the PPRD South Partner Countries members of the ICDO. The Palestinian Authority has an observer status. The World Civil Protection Day is an occasion for these countries to organize a variety of national events: meetings, conferences, radio and television debates, open days, disaster prevention and simulation exercises.
The World Civil Defense Day was originally created by the ICDO in 1990 to commemorate the entry into force of the ICDO Constitution in 1972 and has the threefold purpose of bringing to the attention of the public the vital importance of Civil Protection; of raising the awareness on prevention and self-protection measures in the case of accidents or disasters; and of paying tribute to the efforts, sacrifices and accomplishments of all the national services responsible for the fight against disasters.
