NGOs demand that Police Chief ensure tent installation for Raffi Hovannisian
On Thursday, March 14, police did not allow Raffi Hovannisian’s supporters to install a tent at Liberty Square. A number of NGOs have issued a statement demanding that RA Chief of Police Vladimir Gasparyan hold liable the “policemen implementing illegal actions during the incident.”
Statement on illegal actions of police at Liberty Square on March 14, 2013
On March 14, 2013, once again the RA police impeded - through illegal use of force - the putting up of a tent for RA Presidential candidate Raffi Hovannisian at Liberty Square, who had been on hunger strike since March 10, 2013. Deputies of the RA National Assembly, political activists, journalists, citizens and representatives from a number of NGOs were present during the incident. Representatives of RA Human Rights Defender were also present and assessed the actions undertaken by police as unlawful; however, this estimation didn’t anyhow impact the illegal actions of police.
We think that such working style of police is greatly aggravating the current situation and by its actions is held fully liable for the future possible undesirable consequences.
With this statement we demand that:
RA Chief of Police Vladimir Gasparyan immediately terminate the illegal actions carried out by his subordinates
Hold liable the policemen implementing illegal actions during the aforementioned incident
Ensure the immediate putting up of the tent for RA Presidential candidate Raffi Hovannisian, who is on hunger strike at Liberty Square
