Raffi Hovannisian can become opposition leader, says Republican MP
Both the authorities and the opposition should be strong enough to unite and resolve the current situation, member of Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary faction Hovhannes Sahakyan told reporters in Yerevan.
According to him, President Serzh Sargsyan made a rational proposal to Heritage leader Raffi Hovannisian and this moment should be used to find a solution to this situation.
Raffi Hovannisian’s demand to hold snap parliamentary elections has nothing in common with the current situation, said the Republican MP, adding that the authorities are prepared for amending Armenia’s Electoral Code.
“Raffi Hovannisian received more votes than Levon Ter-Petrosyan but it does not mean that Heritage should have so many members in the National Assembly for the people to trust him. He was able to consolidate the opposition and correct policy can help him become the leader of opposition,” Sahakyan concluded.
The Central Electoral Commission of Armenia on February 25 announced the final results of the presidential elections in Armenia. According to them, Serzh Sargsyan won the elections with 58.64% of the votes, while his closest rival, Raffi Hovannisian, received 36.75% of the votes. Hovannisian disagrees with the election results and is holding mass protest actions. On March 4, representatives of Raffi Hovannisian and former candidate Andrias Ghukasyan handed an appeal to the Constitutional Court disputing the results of the February 18 presidential elections in Armenia. CEC rejected the appeals of Raffi Hovannisian and Andrias Ghukasyan.
Raffi Hovannisian began hunger strike at Liberty Square on March 10 evening.
