Larisa Alaverdyan: Azerbaijan perpetrated genocide in Maragha
Speaking about the tragic events that occurred on April 10, 1992 in Maragha, Baroness Caroline Cox said that “it was truly like a contemporary Golgotha,” and everything is said by this, first Ombudsperson of Armenia Larisa Alaverdyan told a news conference on Wednesday.
The Azerbaijanis killed Maragha residents in most cruel ways: they burnt them alive and dismembered them, which was proved after exhumed bodies were examined, she said.
The “Against Legal Abuse” NGO prepared a package of documents on Maragha and presented it to the United Nations in 1997, Alaverdyan said.
Larisa Alaverdyan added that of 59 Armenians taken captive by Azerbaijan, 19 were never returned, and dozens of books can be written based on the testimony of the captives.
On April 10, 1992, the subunits of the Azerbaijani regular army invaded the village of Maragha. As a result of the aggression hundreds people were killed - mostly women, children, and elderly persons. Scores of people were taken hostages and later were exchanged, but the fate of many of them still remains unknown.
