Power change unlikely to occur in near future, says political analyst
Speaking to Panorama.am, political analyst Suren Surenyants commented on the opinion voiced by first Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan at the constituent congress of Armenian National Congress (ANC) party that it is necessary to carry out a bourgeois-democratic revolution in Armenia.
The political analyst said that he would refrain from using such terms as “bourgeois-democratic” because they are disputable, science is constantly developing and some notions have changed.
“I think there is criminal-oligarchic capitalism in Armenia, which hinders the country’s development. The criminal-oligarchic capitalism should be transformed into liberal democratic capitalism, which implies both competitiveness in the political system and free market,” Surenyants said.
According to him, there are two ways to achieve it. The first way is the power change. But we should be realistic and understand that power change is unlikely to occur in the near future. “The second way is that the President or the authorities should initiate reforms, and I think it is possible during Serzh Sargsyan’s second term in office.”
Surenyants thinks Armenia will sign the Association Agreement with the EU, which will have a certain impact on Armenia’s domestic policy, prompting Armenia to carry out some reforms.
