Turkey: Surb Hovhannes Armenian Church being turned into hostel
The Turkish Human Rights Association's (İHD) Siirt branch studied the destruction of Armenian churches and cemeteries in Eruh province and made a report based on it.
Ermenihaber.am news website reports that members of the organization presented the report at a news conference. They, in particular, dwelt on the dismantling of the Surb Hovhannes Armenian Church in Eruh province, which, with no permission from the municipality, is being turned into a hostel for students who get Muslim education.
During the news conference, the İHD representatives showed photos of Surb Hovhannes Church’s memorial stones with Armenian writings and a cross, saying that the memorial stones were used in the construction of the hostel.
İHD Siirt branch member Zana Aksu reminded that about 100 Armenian cemeteries were destroyed recently, during the construction of Eruh-Siirt road, and the bones of the dead were thrown about, then the villagers collected them and buried them. But the competent bodies took no action in connection with this, he added.
“This is an insult towards the belief of the Armenian people. Those responsible for this situation should be called to criminal liability. The construction should be stopped as soon as possible,” Mr Aksu said.
