Serzh Sargsyan to Alexander Lukashenko: Future of our relations should be in harmony with our friendly past
Visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko met with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in Yerevan. Following the meeting, the Presidents gave a press conference preceded by the signing of agreements on cooperation in a range of fields.
“In one month, we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Today we hold the same opinion that the future of our relations should be in harmony with our friendly past – shoulder to shoulder, we have passed through the Great Patriotic War, and our friendship is fortified by the blood of our heroes,” Serzh Sargsyan said.
Serzh Sargsyan said that he discussed with his Belarusian counterpart issues related to economic and cultural relations, activities of parliamentary friendship groups, high technologies, tourism, etc. Cooperation between Armenia and Belarus within CSTO was also discussed.
“I also familiarized the President with the Karabakh peace process and stressed that the Karabakh people want peace and that our position is unchanged – the Karabakh conflict should be resolved exclusively through peaceful means,” Serzh Sargsyan said.
Alexander Lukashenko, for his part, said that the difficult pre-election period is over in Armenia, at the end of which the presidential team scored a firm victory, which means that the Armenian people trust Serzh Sargsyan.
“We are ready to assist the implementation of your programs,” said the Belarusian President.
Mr Lukashenko said that he shares the opinion of Serzh Sargsyan that there are no closed topics between the two countries.
“We should find new ways in economic relations to increase the trade turnover between the two countries. Food industry, machinery construction and many other fields are favorable for investment. Besides, we are interested in the exchange of experience with Armenia in the field of atomic energy as Belarus is building a nuclear power plant,” the Belarusian President said.
