Tigran Sargsyan: Negotiations with Russia over gas price are underway
“Who prevents the government from importing Iranian gas to Armenia? Don’t you think that it is absurd that we found ourselves in such situation due to gas monopoly?” independent MP Khachatur Kokobelyan asked Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan at today’s discussion of the government’s program for 2013-17.
In response, Tigran Sargsyan said, “Sometimes it seems that it is very easy to reach an agreement with supplier countries. I would like to say that no country manages it easily and that there are many solutions. Armenia is using its leverage to get a low price for imported gas and is holding negotiations with Iran and our strategic ally Russia.”
“We are holding high level political talks with Russia to find ways to lower or subsidize the price. We will present to your judgement the mechanisms of lowering the gas price after signing an agreement with Russia,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that they “did not sit idle” and that thanks to their efforts, the gas price for the suppliers has been kept unchanged.
