Mkhitaryan shines in debut for Borussia
Borussia Dortmund’s new Armenian arrival, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, enjoyed an impressive debut for his Bundesliga side as he grabbed a goal and an assist in a 3 – 1 friendly win over Switzerland’s Basel on Wednesday, Asbarez reported.
The Armenian, who completed his switch to Borussia on Monday, first set up teammate Marco Reus to score an early goal before producing a fine left-footed finish himself.
In an interview with the Football Federation of Armenia earlier this week, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder now wearing the No. 10 shirt at BVB described his move to the German club as a ‘very important step’ in his life.
“Borussia Dortmund fans create a great atmosphere in the stadium. I hope to make them glad and to win in every game,” said Mkhitaryan.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has already begun to show what all the fuss was about for his new club, Borussia Dortmund, Soccer-Laduma writes.
The versatile Armenian attacking midfielder only joined the Bundesliga side earlier this week, but they have already put him through his paces in a pre-season friendly.
The 27 million euro 24-year-old played 45 minutes for Dortmund in their 3-1 over FC Basel on Wednesday night.
In his cameo, Mkhitaryan scored one goal and set up another, leaving his new club certain that they made the right decision in breaking the bank to sign him.
According to Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc, Mkhitaryan enjoyed “a great debut.”
“He instantly took on our game,” Zorc told Kicker.
Dortmund goalkeeper, Roman Weidenfeller, was also impressed by what he saw from the highly-rated and prolific Armenian.
“We can be really delighted about Miki,” Weidenfeller told Ruhr Nachrichten.
“I think we have signed a huge talent that will help us a lot this season.”
Borussia Dortmund greeted their Armenian fans and thanked them for watching the friendly against FC Basel.
“Greetings go out to our fans from Armenia! Thousands of you watched the livestream yesterday and saw the first goal and assist of their [sic] compatriot Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Thank you very much,” reads a post on Borussia’s Facebook page.
