Azerbaijani opposition united candidate Ibrahimbekov’s documents submitted to Central Electoral Commission for approval
The documents of the representative from the oppositional National Council of Azerbaijan, Rustam Ibrahimbekov, have been submitted to the Central Electoral Commission, reports APA Azerbaijani news agency.
According to the agency, the documents were presented by Elman Mamedzade, member of an Initiative group for Rustam Ibrahimbekov. “Ibrahimbekov's documents are submitted with the intention to receive approval for the upcoming presidential elections in the country,” writes the agency.
On August 12 during the session of the oppositional National Council the candidacy of the opposition leader was officially nominated. Earlier, on June 30 the National Council held a meeting in Tbilisi, where issues concerning the return of the leader, the presidential candidate Rustam Ibrahimbekov, to Baku were discussed. Earlier to that, Azerbaijani media informed that Ibrahimbekov will be arrested if he returns to Azerbaijan. It was decided to postpone the return of the opposition leader and apply to the president of Russia Vladimir Putin for a quick solution to the question of Ibrahimbekov’s citizenship. Rustam Ibrahimbekov has denounced his Russian citizenship to be nominated for the presidential elections in Azerbaijan.
The Central Electoral Commission of Azerbaijan has already approved the candidacy of the current president Ilham Aliyev, who’s running for his third term. Presidential elections in Azerbaijan are to be held on October 9.
