Opposition candidate for president of Azerbaijan was attacked
Jamil Hasanly the new single candidate from the opposition National Council of Azerbaijan was attacked, Azerbaijani news portal "Haqqin.az" said referring to the newspaper "Azadlig".
According to the newspaper, a day before, when he was returning home at the evening a chemical agent was thrown at him from the roof of one of the buildings.
"According to witnesses, the substance was thrown from the 2nd or 3rd floor. However, Jamil Hasanly’s bodyguards reacted quickly and saved his life," Haqqin.az writes, noting that Hasanly had confirmed the fact of the attempted attack.
Besides, the candidate noted he recently feels he is under surveillance. "Unknown people gather in front of my house. Yesterday, when I was giving an interview, unknown people started to photograph us," Jamil Hasanly says.
According to him, he knows quite well who these people are, but does not want to name them yet. "Besides that, I feel I am under surveillance every day after I was elected as the united National Council candidate. Unknown cars appeared in the yard where I live. I'm also sure that my phone conversations are tapped," added Hasanly.
On August 24 by overwhelming majority of votes history professor Jamil Hasanli was elected a united backup candidate for president by the National Council of Democratic Forces of Azerbaijan.
Today it turned out that the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan had not previously registered Rustam Ibrahimbekov, the selected united candidate of the National Council, reasoning that he was still a citizen of Russia.
CEC of Azerbaijan has approved of President Ilham Aliyev’s candidacy; the latter is going for a third term. Presidential elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for the 9th of October.
