Khosrov Harutyunyan: Entry into Customs Union reduces probability of military adventure in region
Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union is in the interests of Russia as well as in the strategic interests of Armenia in terms of ensuring security, Christian Democratic Party leader Khosrov Harutyunyan told Panorama.am in an interview.
“Besides the political and economic aspects, Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union surely includes aspects of geopolitical or military-political security. But it is worth mentioning that it deals not only with security of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh but also with security of Russia’s interests in its relations with Armenia. It is very significant. The view that Armenia’s entry into the Customs Union is connected with Armenia’s security only is politically incomplete,” Harutyunyan said.
When asked if the entry into the Customs Union can influence the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, the politician said, “I do not rule out such a turn of events. However, I cannot say what the influence will be. It is obvious, though, that the prospect of maintaining the status quo becomes stronger. The entire region is now more protected from military adventure than in the past.”
