Sedrakyan’s lawyer to appeal court sentence
The lawyer of Vardan Sedrakyan, a former presidential candidate who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of Paruyr Hayrikyan, says he plans to appeal the court sentence.
“We are going to appeal to the Armenian Court of Appeal and Court of Cassation before appealing to the European Court of Human Rights,” Alexander Sirunyan told reporters after the sentence was announced.
Sedrakyan was charged under Article 305 of the Criminal Code. Vardan Sedrakyan, running for the Armenian presidential elections of February 18, 2013, during the election campaign, ordered Samvel Harutyunyan and Khachatur Poghosyan to assassinate leader of the National Self-Determination Union Paruyr Hayrikyan who also ran for president. Sedrakyan does not admit his guilt.
Sirunyan added that the “punishment is too strict,” and that the defendant is not guilty.
Khachatur Poghosyan got 12 years and Samvel Harutyunyan 13 years in prison.
