67% of Armenian citizens favor CU membership
A survey conducted in Armenia among 1,900 people has shown that 67% of Armenian citizens favor Armenia’s entry into the Customs Union, while only 5% said they are against, Evgeny Vinokurov, Director of the Center for Integration Studies at the Eurasian Development Bank, said at Yerevan-Moscow space bridge on “Eurasian Union for Armenia: Economic Advantages and Public Dialogue.”
Speaking of Armenia’s economic advantages in case of CU membership, Vinokurov noted that entry into the Customs Union will increase Armenia’s GDP by 4-4.5%.
“Currently, Russia provides more than 40% of Armenia’s investments,” he said, adding that in case of long-term cooperation within the CU framework, the volume of Russian investments will increase.
Moreover, Vinokurov said, Russia is interested in having a transit corridor to South Asia and Middle East through Armenia and in the future, it will also be possible to resolve the Georgian problem with joint efforts.
