Human rights activist to appeal against Armenia’s decision to enter Customs Union
The decision on entry into the Customs Union was not taken democratically, by means of discussions and consultations, which is proved by absolutely opposite statements made by various power bodies before September 3, human rights activist, head of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office Arthur Sakunts told a press conference today.
He also said that he plans to appeal to the Constitutional Court requesting to declare the decision illegal.
'Rule of Law' NGO chairman Artak Zeynalyan said for his part that he is opposed to Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union, adding that that decision was “in violation of the principle of publicity.”
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on September 3 said that Armenia has made a decision to join the Customs Union, to take the necessary steps in that direction and to participate in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union in the future. Russian President Vladimir Putin supported Armenia’s decision and expressed Russia’s readiness to assist that process in every way possible.
