‘United Cross monument symbolizes centuries-old Armenian-Russian friendship’
The monument installed in the center of Yerevan symbolizes centuries-old friendship between the Armenian and Russian peoples, the monument’s sponsor, Moscow-based Armenian businessman Sergey Hambartsumyan told reporters today after the unveiling ceremony of the monument.
He noted that Armenian-Russian warm friendly ties date back 200 years. “We have been brothers not for 5 or 10 years, but for centuries.”
Sculptor Fridrikh Soghoyan did a brilliant work and a similar statue was installed in the center of Moscow back in 1997, Hambartsumyan said. “We thus show the Russian people that we are united by Christian values. We, Armenians and Russians, carry the same cross.”
A monument symbolizing Armenian-Russian friendship was today installed at the crossroads of Moskovyan, Nalbandyan and Isahakyan Streets in Yerevan. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov and Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan.
