Armenian Ombudsman to apply to Constitutional Court over pension law
The Armenian parliament rejected today the proposal to postpone for one year the introduction of compulsory accumulative pension system. The vote was 45 to 56. The proposal was submitted by the opposition parliamentary factions. The Republican Party of Armenia and Orinats Yerkir parliamentary factions voted against the proposal.
Members of civil initiative “Against compulsory pension payments” are holding a protest action near the Armenian parliament. They plan to apply to the Constitutional Court. Armenian Ombudsman’s Office will join them, Ombudsman’s spokesperson Naira Karmirshalyan told Panorama.am.
The Law on the Accumulative Pension System, which enters into force on January 1, 2014, stipulates that Armenian citizens born after 1974 must transfer 5% of their wages to a private pension fund.
