Cabinet approves bill to set up united investigative body
Today the Armenian cabinet approved amendments and addenda to the Law on State Service at the Investigative Department of Armenia, Law on Academy of Justice and more than one dozen laws which are aimed at strengthening the independence of investigative bodies, increasing the effectiveness of inquiries into various crimes and setting up a united investigative body on the basis of investigative bodies operating in the Defense Ministry and police.
According to Justice Minister Hrayr Tovmasyan, the united investigative body will be tasked with conducting criminal investigations. Currently, criminal investigations are carried out by police, Defense Ministry, Special Investigation Service, National Security Service and State Revenue Committee.
It was also noted that the united investigative body’s chairman will be appointed by the President, at the suggestion of the Prime Minister.
