Armenia to celebrate Old New Year
The Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Old New Year falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar.
In Armenia, the Old New Year marks the end of the long winter celebration.
This Old New Year date also influences the whole schedule of traditional celebrations. Most Armenian families keep their Christmas trees and traditionally full tables until the Old New Year. Municipal authorities also collect public Christmas trees only after the Old New Year.
Most television companies rerun their New Year eve programming on January 12 evening and people get a second chance to celebrate and socialize, Yerevan Report says.
