British traveler describes agonizing hours forcibly spent at Baku airport
The 77 -year-old artist Bill Mundy –one of the passengers of the Airbus A380 of Singapore Airlines that made an emergency landing in Baku airport on the 6th of January, told about the horrible conditions of Baku airport and suggested not to visit that country for holidays, the British portal Henley Standard writes.
“Azerbaijan may have won the European Song Contest but, believe me, I wouldn’t recommend it as a holiday destination,” he said.
The traveler said that they were only offered a drink after almost two hours and then they were told that a replacement plane was being sent from Singapore but would take 14 hours to arrive. Thus, the passengers had to wait for nearly 18 hours.
“We were surrounded by suspicious- looking black-coated men, most of them looking like Joseph Stalin,” Mundy stated.
According to Mundy the staff of the airport didn’t let anyone take photos of them.
Representatives from Singapore Airlines that eventually arrived from Istanbul and Moscow told the passengers that the company had paid $60,000 to give them all visas so they could leave the airport for a few hours.
“I wish they’d never taken the trouble as now we were facing communist-style organization, where we had to wait in an enormous queue” Mundy said.
Mundy said that he was among the lucky ones as he had to wait only about an hour-and-a-half. Some had to wait for three-hours.
The passengers were assigned hotels to freshen up and have a meal but even this proved to be a worrying experience. Firstly, the taxi got lost, then, the check in process in hotel took him an hour. According to Mundy the meal was awful as well.
