Epidemic of suicides grows in Azerbaijan
Though the growing scale of suicides in Azerbaijan is staggering, none of the philologists and physiatrists has applied to certain institutions to ask to do something in connection with the developing epidemic of suicides in Azerbaijan. Yana Madatova tells about this in her article published by the Azerbaijani news portal Minval.az.
The author notes that the problem of suicides is really a serious one and if suicides become more frequent, only one thing can be stated; the society is seriously sick.
Convinced of their own uselessness, weakness, inability to prove anything, the citizens of Azerbaijan with ropes around their necks, with slit veins, fractured on the pavement after the fatal jump from the window are “marching nowhere”.
“Some people believe that everything is all right and there is no need to sound the alarm. Among those who think so is basically the staff of the ministries and the departments, who don’t see (or they are ordered to turn a blind eye) the tremendous growth of the amount of suicides in Azerbaijan. In reality, day by day the problem is becoming more and more serious,” the author claims.
It is noted in the article that the group of activists of the youth movement Dalga, the other day held a rally in front of the Opera and Ballet theatre in Baku. The flashmob was directed against the recent frequency of suicides taking place in Azerbaijan. The young people made a march but the police stopped them and seized the posters.
The article states that the statistics on suicides in Azerbaijan is strictly kept in a secret. Nevertheless, taking into account the data given by the Media, starting from the January of 2014, 3 cases of suicides committed by children under 18 have been recorded. Last year, again according to the Media, more than 50 teenagers, more than 200 women and almost as many adult men committed suicide.
On the eve, social media was “blown up” by the news of suicide committed by one of the leaders of LGBT community in Azerbaijan. He hanged himself in his office.
“American psychologists found out that the number of suicides among young people with non-traditional sexual orientation is much higher in those regions where the conservative part of the population lives. And this same conservatives today don’t allow to bury his body,” the author says.
Madatova notes that it seems to her that there is no end to the suicides. At least the situation will remain such as long as the relevant institutions (the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education) which are responsible to deal with the problems of the society, with the education and the mental health of the society won’t rethink their attitude to their policies and the problems present in the society nowadays.
“Only one thing is needed for the accomplishment of this task; not present Azerbaijan according to the principle “It’s quiet in Bagdad” (look what is happening in Bagdad right now), not present it as a prosperous country but admit that yes, we have problems, extremely serious problems and then think what we have done today to make our citizens stop trying to get out of the problems with the help of the rope, a razor blade and jump from the window,” the author writes meanwhile stating that the above mentioned state bodies of Azerbaijan haven’t done anything so far.
Yana Madatova notes that it is not likely that those institutions would do something as even the statistics of suicides in Azerbaijan is kept in secret. The statistics is concealed from the representatives of the press as well as from various foreign experts, who want to understand the actual level of the problems. As a result, the WHO gets from Azerbaijan the “sham” that “all is quiet in Bagdad”.
