Scientists discover Armenian genes with Chinese, Italians and even the Irish
Scientists from Oxford University and the German Max Planck Institute of Anthropology released a genetic atlas of human admixture history. The map can be found here (http://admixturemap.paintmychromosomes.com/).
Atlas is based on analysis of DNA samples from 1490 individuals in 95 populations in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. The scientists have found out that DNA really has the power to tell stories and uncover details of humanity's past.
Thus, according to the Atlas of genetic mixing, the Armenian gene has been found with some ethnic groups. The Georgians have 12% of the Armenian gene, Turks - 10%, and Iranians - 7.5%.
Approximately 10% similarity has been found between the Armenians and the Italian population of Tuscany. About 4% of the Armenian gene has been found among the Chinese, 3.7% - among particular ethnic groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as among the Indian Jews.
Armenian gene was also found among Lithuanians, Poles, Greeks, Lezghins, Syrians, Cypriots and even the Irish.
It is noteworthy that Azerbaijanis are not included in this research.
According to one of the authors of the research, scientist of Oxford University Simon Myers many of the genetic observations match historical events. For example, the DNA of the Tu people in modern China suggests that in around 1200CE, Europeans similar to modern Greeks mixed with an otherwise Chinese-like population. Plausibly, the source of this European-like DNA might be merchants travelling the nearby Silk Road, the scientist noted.
Another author of research Daniel Falush of the Max Planck Institute noted that each population has a particular “genetic 'palette'.”
"If you were to paint the genomes of people in modern-day Maya, for example, you would use a mixed palette with colors from Spanish-like, West African and Native American DNA. This mix dates back to around 1670AD, consistent with historical accounts describing Spanish and West African people entering the Americas around that time,” he said.
