Expert names two key factors for ceasefire maintenance in Karabakh conflict zone
The situation around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict lasting for two decades is due to two a number of circumstances, first of all, due to two components, political scientist Sergey Minasyan told reporters in Yerevan.
According to the expert, despite the fact that Azerbaijan has intensified the arms race in recent years, the Armenian side manages – through various means – to maintain military and technical balance on the border, ensuring fragile ceasefire. The second component is the international mechanisms and the OSCE Minsk Group’s involvement in the regional peace process, he added.
Minasyan said that a final settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is possible only in case of mutual concessions, adding that there are three possible scenarios for the Karabakh conflict: maintenance of the status quo, final establishment of peace, and war. All sides avoid war, he noted.
“It is impossible to expect any compromises from Azerbaijan. Under the current situation, the maintenance of the status quo becomes inevitable,” he stressed.
