Syrian opposition fearful of presidential election – analyst
Press TV has interviewed Mimi al-Laham, Syrian activist and political commentator from Australia, about the possibility of victory for Bashar al-Assad in the upcoming Syria election.
Press TV: According to polls, a major win for Bashar Assad in the election has been predicted. How would the West react if Assad wins another term in office?
Al-Laham: It is interesting that some in the media have actually came out and admitted that even if in a fair election which they themselves don’t admit this June election is fair that Assad would indeed win.
So, logic stands to question why the elections wouldn’t be fair, wouldn’t be held fairly if Assad believes that he’s definitely going to win. Certainly he’s the most well-known candidate and in this country, in the time of crisis as it is, would probably choose to stick to a leader that it knows that they believe that carry them through the crisis.
These countries that are saying the elections are not legitimate have been backing insurrection. And of course these countries and members of the opposition have been fearful of the elections because it completely undermines their position that they have been claiming to fight for democracy all these years while here is democracy but they continue to fight and they attempt to delegitimize it.
But their attempts to delegitimize it have in fact delegitimized them because they have been bombing rallies, pro-election rallies and they have kidnapped one of the presidential candidates and force him to say at gunpoint that the elections are illegitimate.
I think this shows a certain level of desperation and the scenes that we saw in Lebanon certainly they would be humiliating for these countries because of the hundreds of thousands of Syrians, including the refugees that came to vote ... in the elections.
