Opposition newspaper journalist is arrested in Azerbaijan
Today in Nizami District Court for Grave Crimes in Ganja made a decision to arrest Ershad Ibragimov, the journalist of Azerbaijani opposition newspaper "Azadlig." As the Azerbaijani portal "Haqqin.az" reports Ershad Ibragimov was arrested on complaint of the former official Magomed Bagirov, whose case is under investigation.
Ershad Ibragimov has repeatedly written unmasking articles about the corruption in the department of education led by Bagirov.
According to international organization Human Rights Watch, over the past two years, Azerbaijani authorities by unfounded accusations have prosecuted at least 38 political activists, journalists, bloggers and human rights activists. Most of them are in prison.
According to the "Committee to Protect Journalists” (CPJ), 10 journalists are currently in prison on politically motivated charges in Azerbaijan. There are 5 bloggers and at least eight young activists in prisons, who have been persecuted because of their activities on the network.
According to the Azerbaijani Institute of Peace and Democracy (IPD) according to June 12 data there are 130 victims of political repression in Azerbaijan, 40 of them are "prisoners of conscience" and 90 are political prisoners.
