Seismologist highlights high level of earthquake-resistant construction in Armenia
In Armenia, newly constructed buildings are more earthquake-resistant than those built in the years of the Soviet Union, director of the Earthquake-Resistant Construction Center of the Seismic Service of Armenia, Zaven Khlghatyan, told reporters Wednesday.
“Despite some defects, modern buildings are much safer than those constructed in the Soviet era,” he said.
“After the 1988 devastating Spitak earthquake, all construction norms were revised and in 1994 Armenia approved national standards of earthquake-resistant construction,” Khlghatyan noted, adding that the current standards used in Armenia are very close to those used in Japan.
