Azerbaijan detained conflictologist Yunus - husband arrested human rights activist Leyla Yunus
Arif Yunus the head of the Department of Conflictology at the Peace and Democracy Institute is detained in Azerbaijan, reports by the Azerbaijani information agency "Turan".
Arif Yunus was arrested when he was visiting hes arrested wife, human rights activist Leyla Yunus, in the Baku prison, the article reads.
Lawyer Khalid Bagirov, told that Arif Yunus was at first taken to the 27th police district of Yasamalski region. Then the lawyer was informed that Arif Yunus was taken to the Prosecutor General's Office of Investigation Department for Grave Crimes, to the inspector named Ibrahim Lemberanski. The lawyer was concerned with the idea that Arif Yunus will also get arrested, the article reads.
The article also notes that the health condition of the detained human rights activist Leyla Yunus has worsened. As a result of the acute form of diabetes, her vision has seriously deteriorated as far as in September and October 2013 she had undergone two eyes surgeries. Prior to this, she had undergone another 4 operations, lawyer Javad Javadov, who visited her on August 4, told "Turan".
"In order to maintain normal blood sugar in her body, Leyla Yunus should always take special drugs and she needs medical control. Now, when she is in jail she has no opportunity to do it all. Lack of fresh air and the opportunity to move aggravate her condition even more. Diabetes mellitus affects all organs and her fingers become numb," Javadov says.
The lawyer stated that during this week processing of appeal complaint on the arrest of Yunus is expected.
"Turan" also reports that the official Paris is concerned about the arrest of human rights activist in Azerbaijan. "Yunus, who in May of this year, during his visit to Baku, had met French President Francois Hollande, is a respected person in the field of human rights protection. For services in this area, she has been awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour," the statement of the press service of Foreign Ministry of France reads.
France calls on the Azerbaijani government to release Yunus from custody due to her poor health. Paris also calls to respect the right of Yunus to get protection and have unhindered access to the lawyer, reads the publication.
Human rights activist Leyla Yunus was arrested on 30 July in her house yard. She was charged with state treason, tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurship, falsification of documents and large-scale fraud. Charges of state treason and large-scale fraud were also brought against her husband Arif Yunusov. Based on these charges the court arrested Yunus for three months.
Yesterday Leyla Yunus’ arrest was condemned by such international organizations as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Human Rights House.
