Aliyev tried to save his image – analyst
The results of the trilateral presidential meeting held on August 10 in Sochi were different for each side, political analyst, director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan told reporters in Yerevan.
Speaking about the importance of the meeting for Azerbaijan, the expert said that the meeting enabled Aliyev to come out of the tough situation: the Azerbaijani leader tried to save his image after the destructive defeat of his country’s troops over the past several days. On the other hand, according to him, it can be said that the meeting was an absolute failure of Azerbaijan’s regular military and political blackmail and/or adventure.
As for Russia, Iskandaryan noted that the Sochi meeting was of no less importance for that country since against the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict, it was an opportunity for the Russian leader to show his good will and capability to play a positive role in the settlement of a conflict. In other words, he said, it was an opportunity to influence Russia’s image as a state that can work in the OSCE Minsk Group format.
Regarding Armenia, in the expert’s words, the meeting was a platform to voice once again that the conflict should be resolved on the basis of the three fundamental principles on the negotiating table: peoples’ right to self-determination, territorial integrity and non-use of force.
