International inquiry mechanisms are the best way to prevent border incidents
The incidents along the line of contact between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan will not continue with the same level of intensity, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said in an interview with ArmNews TV.
“I don’t think they [the ceasefire violations] will continue with the same level of intensity, because, first and foremost, those developments illustrated that Armenian armed forces manage the situation, and all attempts of Azerbaijanis just failed. In one place it was quick and sharp, in another – with some losses,” the Armenian leader said.
Elaborating on the mechanisms for the prevention of incidents, Serzh Sargsyan said: “The most efficient way for the prevention of incidents is to establish international inquiry mechanisms. If we are able to establish such a mechanism, I think it will become a serious impetus to prevent those incidents, because that mechanism will entail finding those guilty and showing that to the public and to the international community. I believe we should work on this direction.”
It is noteworthy that the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs have been advocating for the pulling back of snipers from the border and establishing internationally sound inquiry mechanisms for the ceasefire violation incidents since 2009. Both Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh agreed to that readily, whereas Azerbaijan so far rejects that.
