President Sargsyan: Nothing surprising in Turkey's behaviour
Turkey is a country that firmly supports Azerbaijan, said Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in an interview with ArmNews TV, and that shall not be surprising to anyone.
Reacting to the fact that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sent condolences to Azerbaijani leadership in the aftermath of ceasefire violations of recent days, President Sargsyan said: “Why are you so surprised by Turkey's behaviour? Has there been any case when Turkey would adopt a balanced position? Turkey supports Azerbaijan in any issue. All issues. And I would be surprised indeed if Mr Erdogan sent condolences to Armenian side as well.”
Going back to the issue when outgoing Prime Minister and candidate for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared it was an insult to have been called an Armenian, Serzh Sargsyan said: “I think there is nothing to be surprised about. Also, I indeed think it would be opprobrious for us, Armenians, if Erdogan were an Armenian. However, of course, people holding high level positions shall be more reserved. Turkish position is very clear for us, it's obvious. We have been convinced about that a few times, including during the negotiations on [Zurich] protocols. It was exactly for that reason we had been very scrupulous not to have any single clause there to have us constrained in our Nagorno Karabakh negotiations.”
