Manasyan: It is time to replace word ‘genocide’ with ‘yeghern’
The fact that Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, not President Serzh Sargsyan, will attend Turkish President-elect Erdogan’s inauguration contains a certain message, political scientist Alexander Manasyan told reporters on Wednesday.
In Manasyan’s words, it is time to replace the word ‘genocide’ with ‘yeghern’ because yeghern is genocide of the people in their own homeland and this was just what happened to the Armenian people.
“U.S. President Barack Obama – maybe unconsciously – has twice used the words ‘Medz Yeghern’ and we must take advantage of it,” said the analyst.
Manasyan noted that the Genocide Convention was adopted after World War II, the convention is not retroactive and Turkey tries to benefit from that.
“We can bypass the Genocide Convention by using the term ‘yeghern,’” the expert noted, adding that we can convey the whole information to the world with only one word.
