John Kerry discusses Karabakh with Armenian, Azerbaijani leaders
A meeting between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry took place Thursday evening in Newport, on the initiative of the American side, the Armenian President’s press service reported.
The meeting focused on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The parties presented the positions of their countries.
Secretary of State Kerry emphasized that there is no alternative to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, called for avoiding further escalation and finding mechanisms for easing the tensions and strengthening confidence between the parties.
John Kerry stressed the importance of continuing the negotiations in the OSCE Minsk Group format and expressed willingness to support finding ways for a peaceful resolution. He also highlighted the role of political will for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
