United States Department of State is deeply concerned about pressure on civil society in Azerbaijan
US State Department is deeply concerned about the pressure on civil society in Azerbaijan. The corresponding statement was made by Marie Harf, the US State Department spokesperson, during the briefing.
“We are increasingly concerned that the Government of Azerbaijan is not living up to its international human rights commitments and obligations in its actions against civil society groups. We have made our concerns clear to them both publicly and privately,” stated Ms Harf stated answering the question whether the State Department is issuing any kind of protest to the embassy of Azerbaijan for extending video materials revealing the private life of Said Nuri, the U.S. citizen of Azerbaijani origin Said Nuri Former resident of Azerbaijan, who had become an American citizen, was arrested at the airport in Baku on departure to the United States. Initially, the authorities stated that he is still a citizen of Azerbaijan, and then claimed that he had to testify for a criminal case against the NGOs. After the protests of the American side on September 11, Nuri was expelled from Azerbaijan.
