US urge Azerbaijani authorities to be responsible
The war launched by the authorities of Azerbaijan against Western organizations has pushed the official Baku and Washington against each other. United States expects an explanation from the authorities of Azerbaijan in this regard, Azerbaijani newspaper "Azadlig" reported.
Ruling party of Azerbaijan “Yeni Azerbaijan” closed the office of the National Democratic Institute in Baku and restricts the activities of prominent NGOs Oxfam and IREX. In this regard, the Deputy Director of the Agency for International Development (USAID), Robert Lopez is to visit Baku in the next few days.
The publication also notes that the Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan Derek Hogan, a political adviser to the Government Daniel Slasher and Robert Lopez met in the Council of State Support to NGOs under the President of Azerbaijan. During the meeting the activities of the civil society were discussed.
According to information received by "Azadlig" the meeting with the head of the Council Aza Guliyev was tensed, especially during the discussions on issues related to Western organizations. Azerbaijani authorities understand the nature of their actions, but have no logical explanation, the article reads. "In this regard, the authorities prefer to avoid high-level contacts. However, the United States stubbornly insists on explanations and Baku is unlikely to be able to play "hide and seek", till the end," the newspaper writes.
The experts also believe that the only way for the authorities is to discuss and solve the problem with senior officials of the West. Otherwise, the situation can become even more complicated, which can lead to serious consequences for the authorities, the article reads.
