ISIL, convenient pretext to expand war on Syria – activist
The ISIL Takfiri militants are a "convenient pretext" for the United States and Turkey to further expand their war against Syria, says an activist.
Eric Draitser, founder of stopimperialism.com from New York, said in an interview with Press TV that combining the two different objectives of defeating the ISIL and toppling Assad into one strategy is really the goal of United States, Turkey and the Persian Gulf monarchies.
“I think the ISIL is a very useful tool not only for the United States but also for Turkey. It allows them to expand their war against Assad, their war on Syria which they had failed to do for three and a half years, it justifies a military intervention in a situation which up until this point had been unjustifiable through the international community and forums--such as the United Nations,” the activist stated.
The remarks come as the ISIL Takfiri terrorists have resorted to further reinforcements in an effort to break the resistance of Kurdish fighters defending the northern Syrian city of Kobani for nearly a month.
According to opposition sources, the ISIL is dispatching additional forces to Kobani from other areas in Syria, including the militant stronghold of Raqqa.
The border city is still under the ISIL fire despite more than two weeks of airstrikes by the US-led coalition on the militants' positions.
Draitser also noted that it is unclear how the ultimate goal of the US which is an “imperialist intervention” in Syria is going to play out.
The United States and its allies started airstrikes against the ISIL in Syria last month. However, there is a growing concern over the effectiveness of the military operation with many Kurdish officials saying the air raids are not working.
