Each year 200 children are born in Azerbaijan with thalassemia and 300 children with Hemophilia
"If there are 600 thousand disabled people in Azerbaijan then about, 10% of them are children. Ignorance is at the bases of this issue," according to Azerbaijani news agency "APA" said chairman of the committee on social policy of the Parliament of Azerbaijan Hadi Rajabli.
According to him, when the couples do not know about their illnesses before getting married, they give birth to sick children. If the couple is the carrier of disease, then their children will also born ill. Here the difficulty is in the fact that in some countries information about the health condition of the girl or the man is not covered.
Hadi Rajabli also touched on the issue of the deaths of women and the children during the childbirth in Azerbaijan. He noted that children are born with thalassemia and hemophilia.
"Every year 200 children suffering of thalassemia and 300 of hemophilia are born in Azerbaijan. The consequences of this are rather serious; they lead to disabilities," Radjabli says.
The abovementioned blood-diseases are one of the negative consequences of consanguineous marriages that are extremely common in Azerbaijan. About 70% of children that are born in such families suffer from various incurable diseases. According to the world statistics, only one in a hundred thousand people has hemophilia, while in some areas of Azerbaijan, up to 100 patients can be counted, most of them - children. Over the past 30 years the number of hemophiliacs in Azerbaijan has increased for 5 times. Today in Azerbaijan there are more than 3 thousand carriers of this virus, and this figure continues to grow.
