Obama set to enter lame-duck period – analyst
A political commentator says US President Barack Obama is set to enter the “lame-duck” period of his presidency, following a crushing political defeat of Democrats in the US midterm election.
Roozbeh Aliabadi, the managing partner at Global Growth Advisors, made the remark during an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.
The commentator also stated that the Republican control of the Senate will also boost the GOP standing before the 2016 presidential election.
Aliabadi said the American masses have been “upset” over the “poor performance” of both parties in recent years.
Four billion dollars spent on advertising and “negative campaign” for the current midterm election will further fuel the public anger, the analyst stated.
Commenting on the impact of the polls on the foreign policy of the United States, the analyst said that the Republicans’ victory could partially influence Obama’s stance on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, Russia, France, Britain and China – plus Germany.
He concluded that the US domestic and foreign policies are largely influenced by the powerful lobbying groups as well.
The remarks come as election results show that the Republican Party picked up at least seven Senate seats to guarantee at least 52 seats of the 100-member chamber.
The outcome foreshadows a tougher final two years for President Obama under a greater Republican power and influence in Washington.
Analysts believe that the poll is a referendum on the policies of the president, who has lately been facing a low approval rating which was mostly driven by concern over the economic record of his administration.
