Abashin: Armenia’s entry into EEU will not lead to increase of migration
Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union will not lead to a significant increase in the number of Armenian citizens migrating to Russia, Sergey Abashin, doctor of historical sciences, professor at anthropology department at the European University in St. Petersburg, told a press conference organized by Region Research Center.
“About 0.5 million Armenian citizens permanently live in Russia, according to data of Federal Migration Service of Russia for the past two years (not including those who moved to Russia from Armenia and got Russian citizenship). This number is quite stable.
“I believe the accession to the EEU and facilitation of the procedures of stay and employment will not lead to a significant increase in the number of Armenian citizens who will migrate to Russia. We could rather say that under the economic crisis, some new opportunities of legalization will not allow a decline in the number of migrants,” Abashin said.
