International organisations call on Azerbaijan to provide Leyla Yunus with medical care

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) came up with a joint statement (The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders) calling on the Azerbaijani authorities to ensure Ms. Leyla Yunus’ physical and psychological integrity by immediately putting an end to her pre-trial detention and by providing her with immediate and adequate medical care. The statement is posted on FIDH website.

The Observatory further requests that Ms. Yunus be immediately and unconditionally released, as her detention seems to only aim at sanctioning her activities amidst a wave of increasing repression against civil society organisations and representatives in Azerbaijan. “The authorities should immediately take an action to put an end to the physical and moral pressure on Ms Yunus and unconditionally release her”, the Observatory states.

The statement also reports that the pressures on the human rights defender Leyla Yunus, a member of OMCT General Assembly, are still on, namely, she is exposed to arbitrary detention, judicial harassment, denial of medical care, attacks in prison and a temporary transfer to the Investigative Prison of the Ministry of National Security. Her health has been rapidly deteriorating, and is now posing a serious threat to her life, the statement says.

“We also urge the international community to take immediate action and to increase the pressure on the Azeri authorities in order to save the life of Ms. Leyla Yunus”, the statement proceeds.

It also reports that Nils Muižnieks, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, managed to meet Ms. Leyla Yunus in prison in late October, and confirmed that her state was extremely serious and that she cried throughout the meeting.

In its turn, The Committee to Protect the rights of political prisoners called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit Leyla Yunus and other ill political prisoners, as well as to take their health under control, Azerbaijani information agency “Turan” says, referring to the statement sent to them.

“The Committee once again urges the authorities to release unconditionally all illegally arrested political prisoners. For all possible consequences will be the responsible Aliyev’s regime”, the statement says.

Leyla Yunus was detained near her house on July, 30. She is charged with high treason, tax evasion, illegal business, forgery and large-scale fraud. Arif Yunus, her husband has been charged with high treason and large-scale fraud as well. The court eventually decided to also place Mr. Arif Yunusov in pre-trial detention for three months based on these accusations. The Women Human Rights Defender International Coalition has nominated Leyla Yunus to Nobel Prize in 2015.
