Nigeria government inept in stopping Boko Haram – analyst
The Nigerian government and military are incapable of stopping the intensified attacks of Boko Haram Takfiri militants, a commentator tells Press TV.
“The Nigerian government has shown an inept ability to stop Boko Haram; it has shown frailty within the Nigerian military and political structures," Ayo Johnson, an African affairs expert, said in an interview with Press TV from London on Monday.
“Boko Haram is taking its war to the Nigerian government and it is very focused in doing that,” he added.
The remarks come as Boko Haram militants have intensified attacks in the country.
On Monday Takfiri Boko Haram militants targeted a mobile police base on the outskirts of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, overpowering police and burning down the police base.
In the town of Damasak last week, heavily armed militants of Boko Haram sprayed bullets throughout a marketplace on their way to taking over the town in Nigeria’s northeast. An unknown number of people were killed.
Johnson added that Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has lost the people’s confidence in tackling this matter, stating that Boko Haram has “dictated the entire time Goodluck Jonathan has been in power.” He went on to say that the president needs some quick victories against Boko Haram, if he is to have any chance of reelection.
Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden,” has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly shooting and bombing attacks in various parts of Nigeria, which have left more than 10,000 people dead since the group began its militancy in 2009.
